A Laughing Matter

22 August 2018 @ 13:49

From The London Daily Mail, Mark Prigg reporting, we learn:

Laughing gas was critical to the emergence of life on Earth, helping keep our young planet at the perfect temperature, researchers have found.

Early in the planet’s existence, the sun was dimmer than it it today, but the Earth stayed warm due to a strong greenhouse gas effect [Global WARMING!!!], geoscience theory holds.

Astronomer Carl Sagan coined this ‘the Faint Young Sun Paradox’, but for decades, researchers have been unable to find the right balance of atmospheric gases that could have kept the early Earth warm enough for life.

Now a team at the Georgia Institute of Technology suggests that nitrous oxide, known for its use as laughing gas, may have played a significant role.

How come I’m not surprised?
