On The Cargo Shorts Culture

22 August 2017 @ 21:14

Shortly after Noontime yesterday, The Daily Caller published an opinion piece by Ford Springer (1), entitled: It’s High Time Barron Trump Starts Dressing Like He’s In the White House.

While the title pretty much summarizes the author’s take, a quote or two from the article certainly won’t hurt:

Donald Trump and Melania always depart the White House looking their best. The president wore a fine tailored suit and Melania wore an elegant dress just as jaw-dropping as the last. But then Barron steps out in a t-shirt, khaki shorts and some suede loafers.

As Mr. Springer remarks earlier, Master Barron ‘looked like he was hopping on Air Force One for a trip to the movie theater’.  Indeed, or to the beach or the local arcade.

He ends the piece:

…The youngest Trump doesn’t have any responsibilities as the president’s son, but the least he could do is dress the part when he steps out in public.

Since the article was published, Mr. Springer has faced a tsunami of rebukes and reprimands that surprised even old Cynical Bastard me.

Of course, I was not amazed at the brickbats and insults hurled at him by the Die-Hard Trumpists.  They will defend Pompey Magnus no matter what he does [even his unadmitted flip-flops and crass crudities].

No, what took me aback was the large amount of reproaches flung his way from conservatives I consider Sane.

The President and his Family represent the nation to the World and set the tone for our own Culture.  They are symbols and summations.  They reflect the state of our Culture.(1)  It is said that the fact that Jack Kennedy didn’t wear a hat was a big contributor to hats no longer being worn by men in America [another sad legacy of Screwupalot Years].

And this particular family comes to their roles with enough baggage already — the Trumps don’t need to make the situation any worse.  At the very least, they can make [and the fault here is solely with the Mother and Father] their teenage son look the part of the fine, young lad he seems to be.

But, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at this slackening of the standards of deportment in America.  Our nation has become an Every-Day-Is-Casual-Dress-Friday society, where Formality — and the Respect it radiates and enshrines — is either ridiculed or ignored, all for the sake of an Unvirtuous Selfishness.

When you wear a suit or dress to work, your attire helps you to play the part, as it were.  Your clothing choices also reflect your personality, shed light on your who and what you are.

The lax attitude we take towards our clothing reflects the lax attitude most Americans take these days towards protecting their Freedom and Liberties.  And the younger the persons, it seems, the more negligent they are of their dress.

When a Culture rejects Formality’s proper place, it sends a clear message that it no longer cares about itself.

SIDENOTE: At least the Japanese seem to understand…

  1. That appears to be his real name.
  2. Ronald Reagan so respected the Office he held and the symbolism it carried that he would never enter The Oval Office unless he was wearing a suit and a tie.  That serious, that adult, spirit has, sadly, faded to near-invisibility since his time.

You’d think that his older half sister and mother would tell him to occasionally look presentable, considering how closely they manage their image.

However, he’s still a kid, and should be treated as one for a little while.

Barron Trump doesn’t have a job to do other than not get arrested. Being a presidential child especially a young one is a cross to bear not a job. I guarantee Mr. Springer won’t get fired like that Republican staffer who criticized the Obama girl’s attire and they were attending a photo op for the pardoning of a turkey or something.

‘Barron Trump doesn’t have a job to do other than not get arrested.’

Exactly. Baron Trump did not have any say in becoming the son of the president and therefore bears no responsibility in that matter. Mr. Springer is nothing but an old-fashioned jerk.

‘Ronald Reagan so respected the Office he held and the symbolism it carried that he would never enter The Oval Office unless he was wearing a suit and a tie.’

What sort of argument is that? Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States and Baron Trump holds no public office, not even dog catcher.
