If you’re ever heading down 95 through NC be sure to get off at Smithfield and check out the Ava Gardner museum.

Lauren Bacall in To Have And Have Not solidified my heterosexuality when I watched it at age 12. Nothing wrong with Ava, of course, but “to each his own,” as they say.

As you finish your taxes remember the following: the tax code is not about revenue to make sure the government functions; it is about modifying behavior, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The reason it continues to be so complex is that politicians of both parties learned a long time ago that manipulating tax laws is the easiest way to reward supporters and punish enemies. Regardless of the the provisions of the tax code, federal revenues are never more than 15-19% of GDP. There’s no reason to not have a flat tax in that amount without deductions and with minimal exemptions. The reason we don’t is there are too many people who get rich from complexity and politicians court such people to get reelection contributions. The rest of us pay by spending countless man hours doing our taxes or by hiring H.R. Block to do them for us.
