Ebola, Etc: Fear Of An Diseased Planet – #AmericasGotDisease

27 October 2014 @ 22:16

NOTE: These posts are not an attempt to be comprehensive in coverage of the Ebola story, nor of the Polio story.  They just contain some items that have caught my eye [which is still not hemorrhaging blood, I’m happy to report — that only happens when I look at Alan Colmes].

-In the ‘Well, Well, Well…’ category…

From The Daily Caller, Patrick Howley reporting, we learn [tip of the fedora to @LibertyGirlNH]:

Ebola health care worker Kaci Hickox, who was released from quarantine with the support of the White House, is a Centers For Disease Control and Prevention employee, records reveal. The lawyer who helped earn her release is a recent White House state dinner guest.

Hickox was released from Ebola quarantine in Newark, N.J., Monday afternoon after the White House pressured New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to release the nurse that was working in Sierra Leone with Doctors Without Borders. Hickox’s case for release was also bolstered by New York civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, who took on Hickox’s case.

“I feel like my basic human rights have been violated,” Hickox said before she was evaluated by CDC and transported back to her home in Maine.

Here’s an overlooked factor that could have contributed to her White House-backed release: Hickox is an official CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer who performed work for the CDC in recent months.

Hickox’s lawyer Norman Siegel, meanwhile, was an official guest at the White House State Dinner on Feb. 11, 2014, accompanying Jackie Robinson’s widow Rachel Robinson, who supported Siegel’s failed 2009 run for New York City Public Advocate. Siegel is the former director of the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Siegel previously partnered with Al Sharpton to fight against a New York state proposal to keep a DNA database of felons.

How stupid does La Cosa Obama think we are?  Yeah…I know….

-Speaking of Christie…

Rush Limbaugh:

So one week before the election we have here a bunch of states that are deciding to do their own quarantines, and the Regime is flipping out.  Obama and his gang are flipping out.  They want to be in total control of the quarantines.  So one week before the election, once again, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has caved.  We need to quarantine Chris Christie is what needs to happen here, folks.  This is the second election in a row. One week prior to the election, the governor of New Jersey ends up — well, I don’t know arm in arm, hand in hand, in bed with? I don’t know how to characterize it, but responding to Obama’s demands.  I’m sorry.  I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but (laughing) I really think the Republicans ought to make sure that Governor Christie gets quarantined.

He most definitely should be, considering what a plague he is for conservatives and Classical Liberals.

-When I first heard of this next story, I thought the culprit might be New Jersey’s Governor…

From Campus Reform, Kaitlyn Schallhorn reporting, we learn [tip of the fedora to Big Bang Hunter]:

A self-described progressive socialist in Michigan attacked a group of conservative students outside of a Hillary Clinton speaking engagement by attempting to lick them while yelling that he has Ebola.

Then it occurred to me that Khristie Kreme wouldn’t lick, he’d bite.

-From MIT Technology Review, Karen Weintraub reporting, we learn [tip of the fedora to @AllAmericanGirl via Instapundit]:

James Collins, a synthetic biologist at Boston University, says he’s been able to print the ingredients for simple DNA experiments on paper, freeze dry them, and use them as much as a year later. It could lead to cheap diagnostic tests for viruses like Ebola.

The work, described this week in the journal Cell by Collins and colleagues from Harvard, could lead to bandages that change color if an infection is developing, environmental sensors worn on clothing, or cheap diagnostics for viruses like Ebola.

The idea of inexpensive paper-based diagnostics isn’t new. But so far, these tests have relied on traditional chemistry like pregnancy tests do (see “Super-Cheap Health Tests” and “Paper Diagnostics”). Collins says his work now extends the idea to precisely engineered genetic reactions.

As Michael Ledeen [and Insty] would say: ‘Faster, please’.

New York, New York’s a helluva town
The Bronx is up and The Battery’s down
And Ebola rides in a hole in the ground…

Well…the Big Apple has another worm [the Communist Mayor being designated the First Worm] and he’s a reckless and irresponsible Doctor who should have known better – lovely.

Regular Right Guy has a message for New Yorkers:

Count your blessings, New Yorkers; you’re danged lucky that Dr. Craig Spencer is a board-certified specialist. Otherwise he might not have known how to run around your city without infecting cabbies, subway commuters and Brooklyn bowling enthusiasts.

And we never really had Ebola in the U.S. before Barack Obama, so it’s good we have him now to show us how to contain it.

So, lucky about that.

Luck, be Ebola tonight…

-Hey…how about that Polio-like Enterovirus?…

From Sharyl Attkisson, we learn:

The U.S. death toll from the mysterious Enterovirus D-68 continues to rise.

The latest CDC update on the current outbreak of the polio-like Enterovirus D-68 states that it has now been detected “in specimens from eight patients who died and had samples submitted for testing.” That’s one more death than was disclosed in last week’s update. The CDC account does not provide any information as to where the patient died and does not disclose his/her name, age or other details.

The respiratory illness can cause paralysis. The outbreak is likely more widespread than reported since some states are not lab testing all respiratory illnesses to confirm. Most cases are said to be mild.

-From the Editors of Investor’s Business Daily on 17 October [tip of the fedora to Daniel John Sobieski][this is worth quoting in full]:

A disease that was once rare in the U.S. is killing Americans, and its rise coincides with the tidal wave of unaccompanied minor children arriving from Latin America under our de facto open-border policy.

Eli Waller, a 4-year-old New Jersey boy, died Sept. 25. He was reportedly fine and healthy when he went to bed but died overnight, with the cause confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control to be enterovirus D-68 (EV-D68), one more casualty in an epidemic that has swept the country seemingly out of nowhere.

The CDC website reports that from mid-August to Oct. 10, the CDC itself or state authorities confirmed that 691 people in 46 states and the District of Columbia had come down with some sort of respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. Five children, including Eli, died from their infections.

More than a few observers have noticed that the sudden increase in EV-D68 cases coincides with the rapid rise of unaccompanied minors crossing our porous border. These children, often without proper health screenings, have been distributed throughout the U.S.

The CDC denies any connection, noting that cases of EV-D68 have occurred in the U.S. for decades, having first been detected in California in 1962.

“There is no evidence that unaccompanied children brought EV-D68 into the United States, we are not aware of any of these children testing positive for the virus,” the CDC told World Net Daily in an email response to an inquiry into the possible connection.

It is true that EV-D68 has been in the U.S. at least since 1962. But according to a study done by doctors from the Division of Viral Diseases at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases published on the CDC’s own website, EV-D68 “is one of the most rarely reported serotypes, with only 26 reports throughout the 36-year study period (1970 through 2006).”

There’s often a disconnect between coincidence and correlation. But we suspect that the jump in cases from 26 in 36 years to nearly 700 in one year coming at the same time as the open-border influx of improperly screened illegal aliens is more than just a coincidence.

As the relentless investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson points out, a 2013 study in Virology Journal found human enteroviruses, including EV-D68, present in 3% of nose and throat swab samples taken from children from Latin America under 8 years old with a median age of 3. Related human rhinoviruses were found in 16% of the samples, according to the study authored by a team of virologists headed by Josefina Garcia from U.S. Naval Medical Unit 6 in Lima, Peru.

“Keep in mind that Latin American children likely have some immunity and may not be sick, while still contagious,” Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, told World Net Daily.

So infected unaccompanied minors might not even show any symptoms detectable in screenings.

“Most of the border minors are being kept in overcrowded facilities ridden with poor hygiene,” Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, a preventive medicine specialist, told Breitbart News this summer, as the border flood escalated. “This is the ideal condition for a viral outbreak.”

The dispersal of illegal aliens, including unaccompanied minors, throughout the U.S. without proper medical screening is an appalling dereliction of duty by a president and an administration sworn to protect the health and safety of American citizens.

And after the CDC’s bungling, rethinking and dissembling about the Ebola outbreak, it looks as if we can’t trust anything it says about the origins and spread of EV-D68, either.

-Motorhead3000 speaketh the truth:

We can’t change into a 3rd world country without 3rd world diseases.

PJMedia commentator Ulysses Grant:

…It’s not just liberals who lack common sense.

Darryl Issa, at the end of Congressional hearings today, was openly derisive of travel bans and quarantines, saying they could be easily circumvented. How stupid is this guy. Travel bans and quarantines are the only things that work! A government that rakes in close to $4 trillion in taxes should be able to institute travel bans and quarantines then prevent them from being circumvented.

Really, how do we defeat this plague if powerful members on our side give intellectual cover to Obama’s dangerous policies. I guess we are seeing why Issa Committee investigations never produce any results. They aren’t meant to.

New Injun nickname for Issa: ‘Tits On Bull’.

When the first Surgeon General’s report on smoking came out in1964 it was strictly statistical. While that evidence was compelling it wasn’t proof.

One reason there’s no evidence that the illegals brought the EV-D68 virus is no one’s looking for any. I doubt DHS would even share the location of those kids with HHS, assuming any records were kept in the first place.
