Americans: Guilty As Charged

07 February 2013 @ 08:26

From Fox News, the lovely Shannon Bream reporting, we learn [tip of the fedora to Wombat-Socho's Live At Five]:

If the Food and Drug Administration gets its way, your trip to the grocery store could get a tad pricier.

Supermarket owners argue a pending federal food-labeling rule that stems from the new health care law would overburden thousands of grocers and convenience store owners — to the tune of $1 billion in the first year alone.

Store owner Tom Heinen said the industry’s profit margins already are razor thin. "When you incur a significant cost, there is no way that that doesn’t get passed on to the customer in some form," he said.

The rule stems from an ObamaCare mandate that restaurants provide nutrition information on menus. Most in the restaurant industry were supportive of the idea, but when the FDA decided to extend the provision to also affect thousands of supermarkets and convenience stores, the backlash was swift.

‘Most in the restaurant industry were supportive of the idea….’ — there’s part of the problem. By supporting the first encroachment on liberty, these knuckle-headed businessmen helped set the precedent for the expansion of the unConstitutional FDA mandate.

‘First they came for the restaurants and I said nothing…’.

Too many businessmen don’t realize that they have to be involved in the safe-guarding of our freedom and liberties. They concentrate all of their efforts on their businesses and leave their flank exposed to those forces that would enslave them and their fellow countrymen to a Tyranny. Some even join with the enslavers [see: crony capitalists].

Merely giving money to politicians is not enough: you must get directly involved.

The proposed regulation would require store owners to label prepared, unpackaged foods found in salad bars and food bars, soups and bakery items. Erik Lieberman, regulatory counsel at the Food Marketing Institute, said testing foods for nutritional data will require either expensive software or even more costly off-site laboratory assessments.

Lieberman said failure to get it right comes with stiff penalties: "If you get it wrong, it’s a federal crime, and you could face jail time and thousands of dollars worth of fines."

What the Hell…exercising practically every liberty or freedom is a Goddamn crime these days. A ‘federal crime’ — let that term sink in for a moment. Don’t shrug your shoulders because you’re thinking, ‘What else is new?’ Get angry, dammit.

The FDA says much of ObamaCare is aimed at helping Americans live healthier lives, and these proposed labeling requirements would help them do just that. In the text of the proposed regulation, the FDA states: "[The information] should help consumers limit excess calorie intake and understand how the foods that they purchase at these establishments fit within their daily caloric and other nutritional needs."

The government ‘helping Americans live healthier lives’ — this is what happens when we citizens of America, who are charged with the task of being the guardians of the freedom and liberties guaranteed in The Constitution either fall asleep on duty or stick our fingers in our ears, close our eyes, and keep shouting, ‘I’m not listening!’

No government, at any level, should have the power to tell us how to live ‘healthier lives’, but this one now does because WE GAVE IT TO THEM. We cuckolded The Founding Fathers for some cheap baubles.

One final bit:

The FDA said Wednesday it has received hundreds of public comments on the proposal and will take them into consideration when finalizing the regulation. It is likely to be released later this spring, and the agency says it will "include a final economic analysis."

Yeah…it will be released late on a Friday afternoon, say, before Memorial Day. And you already know what it will say.

This is what happens when enough of the people of a Republic fail to do their duty.

The government owns you now and you’d better behave, slave, or you’re gonna get a righteous beatin’.

Could This Be One Explanation?

Meddling-it’s always for the benefit of somebody else, not to your detriment. RAH was right!

Every new federal program, agency, administration, commission, regulation or policy is a foot in the door, the camel’s nose in the tent for more government expansion. Every act of congress (since none of their actions repeal or abolish anything) are first steps on the many long marches through our liberties. No matter how well intentioned any new federal power, authority or program it must eventually devolve into another weapon of tyranny.
