11 September 2011: Eleven Years On

11 September 2012 @ 00:01

-In a few hours on the East Coast of The United States the sun will rise on Tuesday, 11 September 2012, the same as it did on a Tuesday Morning eleven years ago.  I was working a night shift, so I got to work about 0200 hours.  As was my habit, a little after official dawn, I went to the windows that looked upon the North West sky to see what the arrival of daylight looked like for the day.  I remember, as so many others were to recall, that the sky was an incredible shade of deep blue, with not a cloud present.  The air was crystal clear, even in the midst of the city where I worked.  It was the first New England Fall day of the year, the kind that you always noticed because of the slight chill in the morning air and because everything was so damn clear, like the Fall had successfully banished the haze of Summer once and for all.  My mood was enhanced by the sight before me and I cursed myself for not having brought my camera to catch the scene, as I often did when I worked this shift.

By the time I left work several hours later, the sky was still deep blue and the air was still clear, but the world had changed.  I was in my car driving home through the streets of the city and, instead of the typical mid-morning activity, certain skyscrapers were being evacuated, some people were walking as if they had been hit with a stun gun, and others were gathered around cars listening to radios.

I would never look at the skies the same way again.

-I would urge you to read Mandy Nagy’s wonderful post about a group of people whose determination in the days immediately after 09/11 helped keep the American Economy going.  Many heroes arose and answered the call of duty in those dark days and she does justice to one often forgotten group of men and women.

-Lest We Forget…

-Here is the post I wrote last year: September 11th: Look Back In Anger.  It is, as the title implies, a rant against those who have sought to downplay the significance of this day and those who refuse to understand the dangers we face from the malevolent force known as Islam.

-A prayer written by Paco:

May God bless the souls of those murdered by terrorists on September 11, 2001, and may He comfort their friends and families.

May He also thwart those foolish and fearful men who seek to blur the image and even the name of our enemy.

And may He protect and sustain our troops – the flower of our nation – and guide them to victory, and ultimately reunite them with their loved ones, to enjoy the peace they have fought so hard to establish.

A day with skies of Robin’s Egg
And higher up the Cobalt burned
    Standing in the windowed sky
She watched the fatal, final turn

The light reflecting from the wings
Shielding glass that held their faces
Eyes were met as death approached
    Frozen, in fate’s final places

    Quickly Prayers escaped the lips
And in the hearts of these so bound
God’s Will the moment soon divided
    With Spirits leaving mortal ground

They watch us now, the dear departed
And those who Satan’s will employed
    Released the Genie of despoilment
The aim, all freedom be destroyed

We will endure this newer fight
And in the end of all man’s time
Escape the grasp of evil tyrants
Our resting place the true sublime

11 years ago, I couldn’t believe what had happened. That afternoon, we watched the CNN feed being played off a local station during in my nominal History class. It’s one of the reasons I joined the Navy.
