Reason #636: Why The Mushy Middle Annoys Me

22 August 2012 @ 08:28

When I see things like this headline I want to whack ‘Moderates’ upside the head [tip of the fedora to Wombat-Socho's Live At Five]:

Independents favor cooperation, are dissatisfied with political system

The report in The Washington Post concerns the latest Kaiser/WaPo Poll.

Now, look…I ignore all polls because (1) they are, at best [which isn't often], true emotional reflections of the moment, (2) they can easily be manipulated by the poll-takers, and (3) this country is not a Democracy, so, really, what the majority of people think and believe doesn’t matter and shouldn’t concern us — doing what is right should.

The reason I cite this poll is because of the fact that it reminds me of the ‘Moderates’ I’ve met. They are people who believe the normal political situation in The United States is a condition where everyone cooperates and compromises, where our Congressmen of all parties stand occasionally on the Capital Steps, join hands, and sing This Land Is Your Land, and where ‘Independent’ Unicorns sprinkle magic Meet-Half-Way pixie dust on all of our elected officials.

It’s obvious that those who decry partisanship in our politics are ignorant of American History. From the beginning, Americans have been a partisan bunch. While James Madison decried faction in politics, he knew that his objections would be ignored and, thus, he championed a Constitution which sought to control the power any one faction could wield.

Up until about the 1950’s there never was a time in American Politics where partisanship did not rule in our public affairs, even in War. And it served the cause of preservation of The Republic well because it gave us clear lines of demarcation between the different visions that were competing to direct the course of our progress and survival.

It was only when the Left was well on it’s way in it’s march through all of our institutions that ‘Bi-Partisanship!’ became the Holy Grail of our politics. And this was something touted by the Left.

Once they had taken control of The Narrative, once Leftist Thinking began to dominate our politics, it was in their best interests to convince everyone that cooperation on all things was the most important goal. This was because they now dictated the rules, they ran the game, so any compromise would naturally favor them and their schemes. As it has.

The Mushy Middle is composed of people who are not willing to pull a regular shift of guard duty for our freedoms and liberties. They treat their obligations as citizens of a constitutional republic like they treat any other tiresome, but forced-upon-them obligation — they’ll expend the absolute minimum effort on it and quickly move on to something more ‘enjoyable’ and/or more ‘fulfilling’.

They possess no sense of responsibility as citizens of The United States Of America. They cheerfully boast of their dereliction of duty and joke about their self-imposed cluelessness.

They annoy the living Hell out of me.

If you want to live your life this way, fine. But at least do the honorable thing and don’t vote.

That we think Bi-Partisanship is a worthy and noble goal is another sign of The Present Crisis.

SIDENOTE: Another thing that annoys be about these rose-colored-glass squishes is their labeling of themselves as ‘Independents’. In doing so, they are trying to say: ‘See!…I’m above all this tacky and horrible partisan stuff — I’m superior [and I drive a hybrid!]’. Fine, go ahead and be that way, but, when you use that label, you tie yourself to those who are the real Independents — the ones who are fed up with the Establishment party that they tend to vote for and choose not to be officially associated with it. These folks are partisan and they are, unlike you, engaged in the affairs of The Republic. Don’t drag them down to your unserious level.

Sure wish I could share this X 100. This post describes exactly how I’ve always felt about so-called “moderates”.

      Thank you.

You could share it on Facebook and Twitter!

I label these contemptible creatures the ‘compromise at any cost’ crowd. A skilled demagogue with a silver tongue can lead them into a lethal buzz saw, just so long as he makes sure they “feel” everybody’s “happy” right up the terminal moment. Great post.

Spot-on, and thank you. I like the ‘lethal buzz saw’ phrase – so accurate.

Hookers cooperate. Makes you wonder what the moderate expects for their cooperation. Let the bidding begin……

Fortunately (if I understand what I read in the article) most of those who label themselves independents but are moderates are also the least engaged. Indeed many of those who called for bi-partisanship are not even registered to vote.

Preach it brother! You’ve echoed my sentiments on moderates. Moderates are unprincipled.
