Paul Ryan’s Budget: It’s A Baby Step

21 March 2012 @ 07:58

-Over at The Other McCain, Smitty heaps deserved praise on Paul Ryan’s Budget [ie: the adult attempt to deal with our fiscal nightmare].

He also stomps on the logic or Matthew Yglesias and grounds it into a rich compost.

One of things Yglesias wrote was:

But one of Ryan’s oddest ticks is that along with a passion for reducing spending on programs that benefit poor people and a passion for programs that benefit Ayn Rand, he loves to talk about his devotion to the safety net!

The first part Smitty’s reply:

For crying out loud in the dark, Yglesias: you sound like my eight-month old with a diaper load.

Please do take the time to click here and read the rest.

One Quibble, Admiral: There’s no need to insult Itty Bitty Smitty, Daddy-O, by comparing him to the loathsome Matt ['programs that benefit Ayn Rand' is just plain, Goddamn juvenile].

-Mr. Ryan’s budget is a start – a decent one at that – but don’t underestimated the timidity of Boehner and Company. Over at The Spectacle, James Antle reports that the GOP griping is already happening. A highlight:

The Atlantic‘s Molly Ball tweeted an email reaction from an unnamed Republican staffer: "The GOP budget is a great tool to further divide our caucus & provide fodder for Dem attack ads. Thank you Paul Ryan." Not every Republican, even anonymous ones, feels this way. Chris Stirewalt quotes one as saying, "What would it say about us if we didn’t even try to govern?" But even Stirewalt concludes, "Ryan won’t win many friends in his own caucus with his plan and his PR push this week."

Among Republicans who look no further than the next election, the "right-wing social engineering" impulse remains alive and well.

The GOP: Dead Party Walking.

Nick Gilliespie from Reason, Rand Paul, and Denninger all have better plans for the budget than Ryan. Ryan and Boehner are NOT leaders for conservatives or libertarians….they are still in the old republican big spender ruling elite. No future there.

To be fair, it truly is a baby step. However, I believe we need to take a giant step by slashing and burning.
