New ‘Study’ Says: ‘Climate Change Causes Mental Illness’

29 August 2011 @ 11:58

From The Sydney Morning Herald, Erik Jensen reporting, we learn [tip of the fedora to Memeorandum]:

The paper, prepared for the Climate Institute, says loss of social cohesion in the wake of severe weather events related to climate change could be linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and substance abuse. As many as one in five people reported ”emotional injury, stress and despair” in the wake of these events.

The report, A Climate of Suffering: The Real Cost of Living with Inaction on Climate Change, called the past 15 years a ”preview of life under unrestrained global warming”.

…The paper suggests a possible link between Australia’s recent decade-long drought and climate change. It points to a breakdown of social cohesion caused by loss of work and associated stability, adding that the suicide rate in rural communities rose by 8 per cent.

The report also looks at mental health in the aftermath of major weather events possibly linked to climate change.

It shows that one in 10 primary school children reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in the wake of cyclone Larry in 2006. More than one in 10 reported symptoms more than three months after the cyclone.

”There’s really clear evidence around severe weather events,” the executive director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute, Professor Ian Hickie, said.

”We’re now more sophisticated in understanding the mental health effects and these effects are one of the major factors.

”What we have seriously underestimated is the effects on social cohesion. That is very hard to rebuild and they are critical to the mental health of an individual.”

Professor Hickie, who is launching the report today, said climate change and particularly severe weather events were likely to be a major factor influencing mental health in the future.

”When we talk about the next 50 years and what are going to be the big drivers at the community level of mental health costs, one we need to factor in are severe weather events, catastrophic weather events,” he said.

Well…this would explain the rise of Leftism…

I kid…I kid because I love…to make fun of easy targets like the clowns who wasted money on this study.

Actually, what is going on here is very serious. You’ve heard of The Big Lie ― wherein a falsehood is repeated over and over and over until it eventually becomes accepted as truth? The Left has been successfully practicing it for years [see, McCarthy Era, The]. Well, what’s going on here is what I like to call The Big Deflection. When a fact, a truth, can no longer be denied, the Left rummages around in the dreary corners of their minds for an explanation [a Big Lie] that will further their ends and seek to divert your attention from the reality of the situation [in this case, that Leftist policies and thinking have brought about nothing but misery and despair]. Such is clearly the case with this ‘scientific study’. Now, the Progressives are smart enough sometimes to realize the lie they’re putting forth may be seen through, so they start off with using the word ‘possible’. If there is not sufficient a hue and cry against it, the ‘possible’ will soon evolve into the ‘proven’ ― kind of like what happened with Global Warming, if you recall. Other ‘scientific studies’ will start appearing all over the world that ease this transition along and, before you know it, the ‘science’ will be ‘settled’.

By the way: Notice how the good Dr. Hickie, with his last sentence, quietly justifies the need for more government involvement in our lives, and of course, more government spending.

Actually it’s the mental illness known as Leftism that will lead some fools to believe this crap.

    I have to agree.
It DOES cause mental illness, look at all of the left wing morons that BELIEVE this paranoia.

I think a similar study could be arranged, and be more accurate, regarding liberalism. After all, how can people ignore reality to such a degree, and not suffer from pathology.

I’m no Michael Savage fan [I thinks he’s a shyster], but he was right when he said Leftism is a mental illness.

When we all get to heaven, and we sit with the King of kings, we will look into the rubber room in HELL.

Michael Moore will be there with Al Gore, Obama, Hitlery, et al, and we’ll all say I TOLD YA SO.

You know, in the New Testament, Jesus talks about the ‘left and the right’.

    See this, its unbelievable:
He will put the sheep on his RIGHT and the goats on his *left*.

34“Then the King will say to those on his *RIGHT*, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41“Then he will say to those on his *LEFT*, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Its there, in black white and RED:
