Fear And Loathing: CPAC 2011 Day 1

10 February 2011 @ 20:55

It’s that time of year again.  Today began the annual CPAC Conference in the enemy capital, Washington D.C.

America’s favorite gonzo reporter, Stacy McCain, and America’s favorite canoli reporter, Pete, DaTechGuy, arrived last night and quickly partook of the Conference Eve festivities, filing their reports this morning:

-From Stacy:

=Deadline In The Lobby Bar [introductory gonzo, with pictures]

=Murderer’s Row [gonzo in the morning, pictures, and the search for free beer]

-From Pete:

=Everyone Sees The Room And The Speakers [behind the scenes of the prep work]

=DaTechGuy’s Field Guide To Bloggers [interview with Maggi Cook (Madison Project)]

=CPAC Wed[nesday] Photos And Update

-The ‘Deadline’ referenced in Stacy’s first posting refers to the article he had to write for and submit to The American Spectator last night, and which was published this morning.  It’s a good introduction to the Conference and all the stories swirling around it.  A highlight:

This year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) will not only be the biggest in the 38-year history of the event, it is quite nearly certain to be the most festive and energized. Following on the heels of last fall’s mid-term election triumph, conservatives are in a mood to celebrate and this three-day conference is where they will assemble for that celebration.

You wouldn’t know this, of course, from most of the press coverage. According to the media, the right is deeply divided by internecine feuds, with social conservatives battling libertarians and neocons in a grand three-way donnybrook that threatens to destroy the Republican Party.

Sic semper hoc.

For as long as I’ve been covering CPAC, reporters have been hyping the idea that this event is extraordinarily controversial, using their coverage of the conference to suggest that the conservative movement is teetering on the brink of its final ideological implosion. The only difference this year is that some conservatives decided to join liberals in promoting the overhyped idea of CPAC controversy.

The thought of conservatives celebrating and having a good time causes the Bolshes to have seizures [that can be the only explanation for what they report about CPAC].

Throughout today Stacy and Pete have been filing more reports…

-From Stacy:

=Nap Time News [fear and frothing at Michele Bachmann’s open bar festivities this afternoon]

=Birthers And Other Jokes [funny bits and hissy fits]

=Celebrities! [goofy gonzo]

-From Pete:

=CPAC Afternoon Update [brief report and plenty of photos]

= “Ron Paul Has Zero Chance Of Getting Elected” [a report on The Donald’s speech]

=Some Voices Of CPAC [interview with The Sonatores]

-One of Pete’s pictures from today:

Pam Geller, Robert Spencer, Jim Hoft

-I would bet that, though Stacy and Pete are having a good time, they would tell you it’s not the same without Smitty’s presence.  Fortunately, America’s favorite porch manque has dispatched a post from the heart of the ATO.  Please click here to check it out.

-Keep checking-in with Stacy and Pete over at their joints for more on-the-scene reporting.  I’ll have another update on CPAC tomorrow evening.

-SIDENOTE: With the deadline for the big work project I’ve been slaving on coming on Monday, my posting was necessarily light again today.  Thanks for your indulgence.

As a member of your peanut gallery, I’d much rather you had a job that would let you keep blogging, than blog and be unemployed, and then this place would shut down.

Met DaTechGuy at CPAC 2010, and realized that a “real person” could do this blogger thing – followed Ann Coulter who inspired me to say what I mean, mean what I say and this year at CPAC met so many bloggers who are inspirational and helpful – thanks to everyone!!
