‘Who Dat?’ Why It’s Bill Hudak… [Updated Below]

07 October 2010 @ 14:40

…and he’s running against Bolshe Bay State Representative John Tierney in Massachusetts-06.

This Tierney fellow, no surprise considering where he’s from, is one of the most Leftist members of the Congress.  Now, considering this is the People’s Republic Of… and the fact that his District encompasses a lot of towns occupied by The Beautiful People, he should be a safe bet for re-election.  While the TEA Party has a decent presence in the Land Of The Bean And The Cod, it does not have the strength that it does in normal states.  Even with the tsunami that is washing over The Fruited Plain, this most dysfunctional of Commonwealths just seems to be experiencing very high seas.  Add to the mix the fact that, unlike Bwarney Fwank, Tierney is a low-key guy, and what you had was a scenario where he would very likely retain his seat.

However, the gods have obviously been conspiring against the Socialist from Salem [is he a warlock?], as we learn from Stephanie Ebbert, over at Boston.Com [tip of the fedora to Stacy McCain]:

The wife of US Representative John F. Tierney pleaded guilty today in US District Court in Boston to four counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns for her brother, who is a federal fugitive indicted on illegal gambling charges.

Prosecutors say Patrice Tierney managed a Massachusetts bank account for her brother, Robert Eremian, that received more than $7 million in illegal gambling profits and that she provided information to his tax preparer that mischaracterized his profits as commissions. Eremian and another brother, Daniel Eremian, were recently charged with racketeering, money laundering, operating an illegal gambling business, filing false tax returns, and other charges in connection with running an illegal gambling business in the United States from the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Prosecutors say Robert Eremian was the owner of an illegal gambling business in Lynnfield which he moved to St. John’s, Antigua, around 1996. Eremian, the owner and principal of Sports Offshore, maintained a home and other financial and family interests in Massachusetts and managed those interests and family obligations through Massachusetts bank accounts funded by illegal gambling proceeds, prosecutors allege.

A federal grand jury indicted Robert Eremian and Daniel Eremian of Boca Raton, Fla., in August on charges of racketeering, illegal gambling, and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors allege that Tierney managed her brother’s finances in Massachusetts, kept detailed records of his financial transactions, and provided that information to his tax preparer.

From the Boston Herald, Laurel Sweet reporting:

Patrice Tierney is free on personal recognizance until her Jan. 13 sentencing, when federal prosecutors will recommend Judge William G. Young commit her to three months of house arrest and two years’ probation.

“I take full responsibility for what my part in this was,” she told Young, who could put the soft-spoken grandmother in prison for up to six months.

Federal corruption prosecutors accused Patrice Tierney of embarking on a “conscious course of deliberate ignorance” when she stated to Robert Eremian’s tax preparer that the millions amassing in his Bank of America account came from commissions he earned as a computer consultant to Sports Offshore of Antigua.

John Tierney released a statement yesterday in which he stood by his wife and claims [tip of the fedora to Wicked Local]:

While devastated to learn that her brother might have deceived her and so many others, Patrice has acknowledged and agreed that she should have done more to personally investigate the true nature of Mr. Eremian’s business activities in the course of carrying out his requests in paying his children’s household expenses, family medical bills, and his personal bills and taxes from a checking account in which he deposited funds.

Accordingly, Patrice has entered into an agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office wherein she accepts full responsibility for being “willfully blind” to what her brother was doing.

She now realizes that the trust she formerly had in her brother was misplaced and she should have more aggressively questioned Mr. Eremian when he asked her to pay his personal, some family obligations and tax payments from an account he funded.  More specifically and while there are not any allegations of any income tax loss to the government, Patrice deeply regrets the role she played in forwarding his tax-related information that listed his earnings as “commissions” rather than “illegal gambling” income.

By the way, the name for what she committed is ‘money laundering’.

Other sources report that Tierney voted against the law his wife violated when it came before the Congress.  Hmmm.

What did Tierney know and when did he know it.  Was he, too, willfully blind?  I think the voters of MA-06 deserve an answer.

Bill Hudak needs our help.  From the same Laurel Sweet report:

As of Aug. 25, Hudak’s campaign coffers had $92,707 cash on hand compared to Tierney’s $1,509,338, according to the Federal Election Commission. Hudak, a Saugus attorney and vending machine magnate, yesterday said in an online statement, “Congressman Tierney must disclose to the voters exactly what he knew of this criminal conduct and when.”

Stacy McCain is all over the Tierney story and has a good analysis of how and why Bill Hudak can win.  He’s also being his typically impish self:

“My wife never committed tax fraud”

Kinda catchy, don’t you think? I just made that one up. …but I think simpler is better when it comes to campaign slogans. Another one that might work: “My brother-in-law isn’t a federal fugitive.”

John Tierney’s re-election slogan? “Married to the Mob.”

This is a race we can win…

DaTechGuy, who probably should be nicknamed Camera Ready Guy, has an interview with Mr. Hudak up at his website.

    Well, she got caught.

One of the rules of being a successful politician: if you have dead bodies, you have enough evidence to destroy the careers of everyone who knows about it. See: Johnson, Lyndon Baines.
