On The Threshold Of Turmoil…Again

25 September 2010 @ 01:03

I’m old enough to have lived through the Carter Presidency and I can tell you it was not a pleasant period.  We had oil shortages that drove the prices of practically every item sky-high.  Salaries were not keeping up with inflation so you were, in a sense, receiving automatic pay cuts every month.  In the post-Watergate years, there was a feeling that we had become a nation corrupt and in decline.  In short, it was a lousy time to be an adult.  Some turned to debauchery and some to fervid prayer.  Some just gave up.  While the economy was not in a depression, the society was.

Then came Ronald Reagan and, literally, it was morning in America again.

In the nearly thirty years since he took The Oath, we have had our ups and downs [most especially on 09-11], but we have maintained that old American upbeat attitude above all.

Things have changed since 20 January 2009.

A big positive has come out of the blatant and brazen Leftism of the current Congress and Administration: the great reawakening of wide swaths of the American People to the dangers posed by Progressivism and their getting involved in taking back control of the governments of this country.

While this has been something to celebrate, there is one major aspect of our situation that continues to grow worse and it threatens our very survival.  Victor Davis Hanson understands exactly what it is [tip of the fedora to Instapundit]:

…we have now completed our own version of 1977–78, with updated Carteresque damnations of past policies, loud lectures on past American sins, estrangement from Europe and Israel, and self-righteousness about our evolution beyond simplistic views of good and evil. All that is left now is the denouement: another 1979–80, when the world sized us up and concluded that there would be few repercussions from regional “adjustments,” and wars by the Soviet Union, China, and Communists in Central America, hostage-taking, embassy-storming, and all the rest paralyzed a sanctimonious president.

History repeats in the general sense: our enemies have weighed us in the balance and found us wanting and our Commander-In-Chief a weakling.  But this time it will be much worse.  Back in 1979-1980, rogue nations and groups did not possess nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.  The death-worshipping cult, known as the Mohammedins, were not fully awakened.  The other nations of The West had not reduced themselves to such a pathetic level of impotency.

Be watchful.  Be prepared.  Pray.
