Ronnie James Dio, R.I.P. [Updated Below]

16 May 2010 @ 20:32

One of the greatest Rock & Roll vocalists, Ronnie James Dio, had died of stomach cancer.

He had a classic Heavy Metal voice and could pen a damn fine song lyric.  I first discovered him when I discovered Ritchie Blackmore’s group after Deep Purple, Rainbow.  Mr. Dio then went on to sing with Black Sabbath where he did some great work.  Finally, he went and formed his own group, Dio, which recorded one of the best Heavy Metal songs, Rainbow In The Dark.  Ronnie James was also credited with popularizing the malokia [Devil’s Horns] symbol, made by extending only the index finger and pinky.

Requiescat in pace.

Here are two of his best performances and lyrics, both done with Rainbow:

And…

UPDATE on 17MAY2010 at 1647 [wasn’t RJD roaming around England in 1647 in one of his previous lives?]…

Lipton T. Bagg has penned a very spot-on and well-done eulogy for Ronnie James, along with posting a video of him doing Heaven And Hell, perhaps the best song he wrote and sang when he was with Black Sabbath.  A highlight from Lipton’s posting:

I met Ronnie once – in the early 1990s while working at the (boring but) pre-eminent AOR FM station in Los Angeles. A man whose physical stature did not correlate to the power of his voice (if you are familiar with Dio’s singing, you know even Shaq couldn’t match that voice), in person he was the most hospitable and engaging guy you would ever hope to meet – quite contrary to his quasi-demonic stage character.

Sing me a song, you’re a singer…

I’m glad to see that so many bloggers are covering this. It would seem that we have more in common than simply a love for freedom. Dio will be missed.

In Ronnie’s honor I have altered my header as well.
“…if you listen to fools, THE MOB RULES…”

But I will break with Bob with the choice of performance – I went with “Heaven and Hell” with Sabbath…

I went with the two Rainbow cuts because I knew others would go with the Sabbath and Dio cuts. I’m not sure if a lot of RJD fans have heard his Rainbow work.

Heaven and Hell is a classic.
