James O’Keefe Arrested For Attempting To Bug Senator Landrieu’s Office

26 January 2010 @ 19:38

[tip of the fedora to Daniel Foster of NRO]

From Michelle Malkin:

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that James O’Keefe, half of the ACORN-busting duo that conducted undercover stings across the country last summer, was arrested today in an alleged wiretapping plot at the New Orleans office of Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu. O’Keefe and three other young men were arrested by the FBI. One of the men is the son of the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana.

The Times-Picayune has not posted the full FBI affidavit, but the details they have are damning. This is neither a time to joke nor a time to recklessly accuse Democrats/liberals of setting this up — nor a time to whine about media coverage double standards. Deal with what’s on the table….

Section 10 of the affidavit has Mr. O’Keefe admitting he was working with the three other men; here is the key sentences:

…O’KEEFE and DAI have also admitted to federal agents that [they (I assume leaving out the word was a typo, otherwise, the sentence does not make any sense)] worked with FLANAGAN and BASEL in the planning coordination, and preparation of the operation.  O’KEEFE further admitted to recording FLANAGAN and BASEL inside of Senator Landrieu’s office.

Game, set, match, it would appear.

Mrs. Malkin is quite right: I can see nothing here so far to suggest a set-up; what I see instead is a stupid young man who got too damn cocky for his own good and crossed a very solid line.

If this all turns out to be true [and right now it appears these idiots channeled the White House Plumbers] than Mr. O’Keefe will have done damage to the cause he supposedly cares about.

Michelle Malkin is spot-on:

But for now, let it be a lesson to aspiring young conservatives interested in investigative journalism:

Know your limits. Know the law. Don’t get carried away. And don’t become what you are targeting.

So is GatorDoug [who has, rightfully, awarded OKeefe his Daley Douchebag Award]:

Well, thanks a bunch there James, that is about the last thing we need. See, James WE are not thugs, WE, are not criminals, WE are, or ought to be better than that….

Andrew Breitbart has issued this statement:

We have no knowledge about or connection to any alleged acts and events involving James O’Keefe at Senator Mary Landrieu’s office. We only just learned about the alleged incident this afternoon. We have no information other than what has been reported publicly by the press. Accordingly, we simply are not in a position to make any further comment.

The Memeorandum thread is here.

Over at Hot Air, Allahpundit has looked into the legal side of the matter.  He is, I think, correct in his comments on Mr. Brietbart and Big Government:

The editors of Big Government claim they knew nothing about it, which is almost certainly true: No way would Breitbart be so stupid as to sign off on tapping a senator’s phone. What makes this doubly bizarre, of course, is that O’Keefe was already threatened with legal action by ACORN for surreptitiously videotaping inside their offices. You’d think if he was planning to try something as insanely underhanded as this, he might have done, say, a Wikipedia search about whether it’s illegal to, um, tamper with government phone lines.

Updates to this post possible.

Thanks Bob for the linkage. There Is one positive thing for me anyway. My blog is getting tons of hits from people looking for Hannah Giles. Thanks O’Keefe!

Ah kreppe, as the altercacuers at shul would say. I’m ticked at O’Keefe for being such a jerk. In the era of Obama, there is no mercy for a Conservative who stupidly breaks the Law.

    Hold the phone!

The feds wire-tap our phones, steal our money, enter our houses without just cause, steal money from the unborn, taser non-violent people, read our emails, check our library accounts, and make backroom deals with OUR money (just to name a few) …

What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander!

I applaud O’Keefe! Since the FBI won’t investigate the real criminals in this country (read politicians), it’s good to see a citizen doing their job for them!

Politicians deserve the same (if not more) scrutiny than any of the rest of us. Consider it the Citizens Patriot Act!
