The Debt Of A Salesman [Updated Below]
The Debt Crisis Is Looming! The Debt Crisis Is Looming!
‘Tis true: Barack The Unready, Harry ‘The School Marm’ Reid, Nancy ‘Sulla’ Pelosi have been stringing the American People along for several years now and the loom is breaking down.
The accusation that Boehner is the obstacle to a “bipartisan compromise” is laughable. The GOP leadership very much wants a deal, but Obama and Harry Reid’s Democrat majority in the Senate refuse to play ball.
For two years, Obama, Reid and Nancy Pelosi acted as if they could spend infinite money with no regard whatsoever to the effects of deficit spending. Now — with Obama looking for something he can score a “win” against the GOP — suddenly they’re all about the balanced approach.
…Obama wants, wants, WANTS, W A N T S a crisis….
He goes on to quote from a perceptive analysis by Charles Gasparino and then from Dick O’Bama’s master, Saul Alinsky.
Indeed, it is through Chaos that the Left has alsways believed it is best to seize more power: create a situation of as much anarchy as possible and the High Priests of Progressivism can ‘humbly’ offer their services to restore order. Of course, the price to be paid is very steep: one’s very freedom and liberty, but many have shown a willingness to pay it and those brave few who refuse…well, they can be ‘taken care of’. It is very much like the kind of deals the Devil makes with Human Beings — in fact, it is a deal with an incarnation of Old Scratch.
In the Comments section of Stacy’s posting, Duane Hershberger offers this comment:
[Stacy wrote:] “what happens to your money is of no interest to the Democrats. All they care about is politics.”
Not quite, they think it’s _their_ money in the first place. You are just a 3rd party administrator.
They see it as a loan that they can call in whenever they want for whatever they want.
SDN offers this comment on what DH wrote:
Now, Duane, in the Copperhead world, slaves aren’t allowed to own property, and the fact some think they still can means they haven’t learned their place.
It reminds me of sharecropping: you get paid, say $20, a week, but THE MAN deducts for your room, board, water, tools, and clothes, so that by the end of the week, you end up owing him — and you never get off the farm.
You load sixteen tons and whadda you get
Another day older and deeper in debt….
In his latest column, Mark Steyn reminds us that the Establishment Elites in Washington live in an alternative universe:
But “political reality” operates to different rules from humdrum real reality. Thus, the “debt ceiling” debate is regarded by most Democrats and a fair few Republicans as some sort of ghastly social faux pas by boorish conservatives: Why, everyone knows ye olde debt-limit vote is merely a bit of traditional ceremonial, like the Lord Chancellor walking backwards with the Cap of Maintenance and Black Rod shouting “Hats off, strangers!” at Britain’s Opening of Parliament. You hit the debt ceiling, you jack it up a couple trillion, and life goes on — or so it did until these GOP yahoos came along and decided to treat the vote as if it actually meant something.
I count Cryin’ John Boehner and Granny Mitch McConnell among them. The latter has already caved with his actions last week and I’m just waiting for the former to ‘get pragmatic’ — it’s in his DNA [along withe the hyperactive tear gene].
And another thing: What is it with this foolish waste of time on a Balanced Budget Amendment? It stands absolutely no chance of passing. Big deal that the Democrats say they will allow a vote on it. Thinking such a thing is a won concession is the thinking of madmen.
It seems reasonable to conclude from the planlessness and budgetlessness of the Obama/Reid Democrats that their only plan is to carry on spending without limit. Otherwise, someone somewhere would surely have written something down on a piece of paper by now. But no, apparently the Department of Writing Down Plans is the only federal expense the president is willing to cut. You begin to see why the Europeans are a little miffed. They’re passing austerity budgets so austere they’ve spawned an instant anti-austerity movement rioting in the street — and yet they’re still getting downgraded by the ratings agencies. In Washington, by contrast, the ruling party of the Brokest Nation in History has no spending plan other than to plan to spend even more — and nobody’s downgrading them.
Well, don’t worry. It’s coming. The domestic media coverage of this story has been almost laughably fraudulent: To the court eunuchs, a failure to raise the debt ceiling by a couple of trillion would signal to the world that American government was embarrassingly dysfunctional. In reality, raising the debt ceiling by a couple of trillion without any spending cuts would confirm to the world that American government is terminally dysfunctional.
In the debt-ridden treasuries of Europe, they’re talking “austerity.” In the debt-ridden treasury of Washington, they’re talking about more spending (Kathleen Sebelius is touting new women’s health programs to be made available “without cost.”) At the risk (in Samuel Johnson’s words) of settling the precedence between a louse and a flea, I think Europe’s political discourse is marginally less deranged than ours. The president is said to be “the adult in the room” because he is reported to be in favor of raising the age of Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67.
By the year 2036.
If that’s the best offer, there isn’t going to be a 2036, not for America. As the Europeans are beginning to grasp, eventually “political reality” collides with real reality. The message from a delusional Washington these last weeks is that it won’t be a gentle bump.
Dead solid perfect.
UPDATE at 2112…
-In an interview last Thursday on the Hugh Hewitt Show, Mr. Steyn discussed the implications of this kabuki dance on our image in the world, our national security, and on we the taxpayers [tip of the fedora to Paco]:
…You know, the world is not watching just to see Congress pass a debt ceiling increase. The world is watching to see if the American political class is willing to get serious about America’s unsustainable level of government spending, because the various holders of U.S. Treasury debt do not want to be dragged down with a collapsed dollar and a collapsed United States government. And by the way, these are not, people tend to think that this sort of debt stuff just affects foreigners. I mean, if you’ve got a pension fund, if you’ve got insurance funds, all these things, municipal, state and municipal funds, these are all among the biggest buyers of U.S. Treasury debt. And so it’s not just the Chinese and the Japanese and the British. There’s a lot of people in America who are going to be affected by the depravity and incompetence of the political class.
-Stacy McCain heaps some well-deserved scorn on Dick O’Bama for…well, living up to his Christian name by going on TV tonight at 2100 to deliver an ‘important speech’ to the American people’:
The World’s Least Plausible Reality Show continues:
Mr Obama will address the nation tonight at 9pm Eastern Time and U.S. leaders are trying to reassure jittery investors as Wall Street markets closed down and global indexes wobbled today.
Jeebus, this guy doesn’t know when to quit, does he?
Thankfully, the markets maintained their stability today, despite the Man-Child-In-Chief’s tantrums — Stacy again:
You know why the markets aren’t in complete panic over Obama’s reckless debt-ceiling brinksmanship? Because they don’t take it any more seriously than I do. It’s so transparently a phony political kabuki dance — a show-bizzy publicity stunt whereby Obama depicts himself as the Only Adult in the Room — that investors simply can’t believe anyone could be that stupid.
Oh…but Little Lord Hemorrhoid, yes he can!
-King Shamus makes an excellent observation about BHO that hadn’t occurred to me:
In the 2+ years that President Barack Obama has been leading America, the only time that guy flashes his fangs is when the Republicans deny him something he wants. The only situation that calls for St. Barry The Lightbringer to drop his divinely inspired professorial countenance is when some part of the conservative or traditionalist faction in American life (“The Cambridge police acted stupidly…”) upsets his apple cart. It is an interesting insight into the mind of Obama that the people that make him the most annoyed are his fellow citizens.
Indeed. It’s like he goes through the Pon Farr when he’s denied [or is it the 'Jamie Farr'?].
-Related: Over at The Daley Gator, the DarcPrynce has solid evidence proving what we long suspected: that BHO is a mental midget.
-Doug Ross writes the speech Cryin’ John Boehner should give [but won't, of course]. Doug’s 100% right: this fool should be primaried.
-He also has the story of the TEA Party folks who picketed Boner’s district campaign office.
-Finally, Paco has a message for the three blockhead Senators who tried to pull a fast one and I hereby take the liberty of applying it to the whole of The Stupid Party Establishment:
Listen up, blockheads. Are you purposely trying to improve the odds of a genuine insurrection? Do you not see that the political and economic landscape is shifting beneath your feet? If you can be played by an amateur like Obama, can you even begin to grasp how utterly worthless you are?
If the GOP gives in one fraction of an inch here, many of us are going to start having some interesting thoughts.
YOU BEEN WARNED.
